Japanese Necklaces

These are handmade Japanese necklaces, finished nickel-free — and nickel-free is the reason most people find us. If a plated chain has ever left a mark on your skin, these were made with you in mind.

The line runs from a single freshwater pearl on a fine chain to a small crystal pendant, a Y-lariat that falls just below the collarbone, and coin and horseshoe pendants with a little more weight to them. Metals are gold, silver and pink gold. Lengths are short enough to layer and long enough to wear on their own.

Each piece is made by hand in a small workshop in Japan, in short runs. That means slight variations from one to the next — the shape of a pearl, the exact set of a stone — and it means we rarely make the same thing twice.

What nickel-free actually means

Nickel is the most common cause of a reaction to jewellery, and it hides in the plating of a great deal of everyday costume jewellery. Every necklace on this page is made without it, so it can stay on through a long day, a shower, a warm afternoon.

Layering them

Two lengths read better than two of the same. Wear the single pearl at the throat and the Y-lariat or a long horseshoe below it, and let the chains sit rather than match.
